READING AND CONVERSATION
PART I
Mr Allen: Did you enjoy your afternoon
at the Zoo Yesterday?
Mr. Burrows: Yes, very
much. It is very funny, but every I visit a zoo, I always Wonder whether animal can reason whether they only act by instinct.
What do you think?
Mr. Allen: That is a very difficult question
to answer. It is difficult to say Where instinct ends and reason begins. We had a cat, which had kittens. When they begin to eat solid food, everyday
she carries pieces of meat and fish we gave her to the little ones. One day we give the kittens to some friends,
but for a day or two she continued to carry food to the place where the kittens
had been. I suppose that it was instinct. Then she stopped doing so. Had she begin to
reason?
Mr. Burrows: How we can know? If only animals
could speak!
Mr. Allen :Well, if they cannot speak or
reason as human beings do, at least some of their senses are much more acute than
ours. My dogs for example, is getting old
and his sight is not very good, but he can still find e by his sense of smell
Mr. Burrows: Yes, and then there is the sense of
sight of some birds, like eagle, or other such us pigeons, which must have a
sixth sense-that of direction. What do
you think of their feelings compared to ours?

Mr. Allen:
With human beings, the different
feelings are much more developed than with animals . Is the feeling that animals show for their
young and their master instinct or it is something higher?
Mr. Burrows: I don’t
suppose anybody can answer that question
Mr Allen: This
suggest another question: “Do animals hate?”
Mr. Burrows: The
cat is said hate the dog. Sometimes we
even say:”To live a cat and a dog life” To express that a husband and his wife
cannot agree.
Mr. Allen:
Personally, I don’t think it is hate, but rather instinctive fear-at least
where cats and dogs are concerned!
Mr. Burrows: Perhaps.
I wonder what the time is. Remember, we
promised to dine with Mr. and Mrs. Jones and their family
Mr. Allen: It
is five to six. We had better go and get
ready, and as it is such a fine evening we can walk to their place.

TEORI ADJECTIVE:
A. Pengertian Degree of Comparison
Degree of comparison
adalah membandingkan kualitas sifat (adjective) atau kualitas pekerjaan
(adverb) dari dua pelaku atau lebih. Misal:
1.
Kamu lebih cantik dari pada saya. Kalimat tersebut membandingkan
dua pelaku dari segi kualitas kecantikan wajahnya.
2.
Dani berjalan lebih cepat daripada Dono. Kalimat tersebut
membandingkan kualitas pekerjaan (berjalan) dua pelaku dimana Dani lebih cepat
(faster) daripada Dono.
B.
Macam-Macam Degree of Comparison
1. Positive adalah membandingkan dua
atau lebih orang atau sesuatu yang mempunyai kualitas kerja atau sifat yang
sama.
2. Comparative adalah membandingkan dua atau
lebih orang atau sesuatu yang mempunyai kualitas kerja atau sifat yang tidak
sama, dimana salah satunya lebih jika dibanding yang lainnya.
3. Superlative untuk membandingkan
seseorang atau sesuatu dengan group atau kelompoknya.
C. Peraturan Degree of Comparison
1.
Penggunaan comparative dan
superlative tergantung dari jumlah suku kata adjective-nya (kata sifatnya).
e.g: Tall (1 suku kata), Famous (2 suku kata), Beautiful (3 suku kata)
o 1
suku kata: tinggal nambahi -est/-er di belakangnya.
o 2
suku kata. Ada yang menggunakan more ada yang menggunakan -er untuk
comparative. Untuk superlative ada yang menggunakan -est ada yang menggunakan
most.
o 3
atau lebih. Musti wajib bin harus pake Most dan More.

Pengecualian:
o beberapa
kata sifat dalam comparative dan superlative akan mengalami pen-double-an huruf
terakhir. seperti: big>bigger dan biggest; sad> sadder dan saddest.
o Kalau
kata sifat diakhiri dengan huruf “y”, maka diganti dengan “i”.
Seperti: Happy>Happiest dan Happier
o Pengecualian
alias khusus kata-kata di bawah ini perubahannya adalah sebagai berikut:
o Good
> Better > Best
