(The Train is
approaching London)
Mr. Allen : We shall soon be at Waterloo Station. We had better get ready and get our bag
down
Mr. Burrows :At which hotel shall we stay?
Mr. Allen : We can stay at the Grosvenor, at Victoria Station.
It’s central, not expensive and will be very convenient when we leave for
Paris
Mr. Burrows : The train is stopping. What an enormous station! Shall
I call a porter?
Mr. Allen : Please do
Mr. Burrows : Porter! Please take these two bags to a taxi
Porter : Have you anything besides your hand luggage.
Mr Allen : Yes, There are two trunks
Porter : Here is the taxi, sir
Mr. Allen : You can put the trunks besides the driver
Mr. Burrows : Here’s something for yourself, porter.
Porter : Thank you, sir
(to the taxi
driver)
Mr. Allen :Grosvenor Hotel. Victoria Station, please!
Mr. Burrows :What are those beautiful buildings?
They are the Houses of
Parliament. The bridge we have just
driven over is Westminster Abbey. We
are now driving along Victoria Street.
Here is Victoria Station and the hotel. Let us get out.
(They enter
the hotel)
Mr Burrows :Where is the office? (Speaking to Reception clerk) We
should like two rooms please.
Reception clerk :We have some vacant rooms on the
fourth floors all are taken
Mr. Allen :I do not like this room.; It is too dark.
Mr. Burrows : Where does the window look to?
Porter : To the court-yard
Mr Burrows :Have you no vacant rooms in front of the hotel?
Porter :Yes, sir. Would you like to see them?
Mr Burrows :Please.
(They go to
the vacant rooms in front of the hotel)
Mr Burrows :Well, this suits me better. How do you like this, Mr.
Allen?
Mr. Allen :I like it very much. Where is the other one?
Porter :Next door, sir; here it is
Mr. Allen :Do you know, What the price of these rooms is?
Porter :Yes, Sir. Five pounds a day each, including
breakfast.
Mr. Allen :Very good We’ll take these rooms. Kindly bring our luggage up.
Mr Burrows :At what time is lunch?
Porter : Table d’hote (a table d’hote meal in a
restaurant costs a fixed price and there are only a limited number of dishes
to choose from the table d’hote menu) is at one o’clock; but you can eat
‘ala carte (if foof in a restaurant is ‘ala carte, or if you eat ‘ala
carte, you choose from a list of dishes that have separate prices, rather
cheap than having a complete meal at a
fixed price). The restaurant is on
the first floor.
(Later in the
dining room)
The head waiter : Please take a seat at this
table. What are the numbers of your
rooms, please?
Mr. Allen :57 and 58
(Mr. Allen
and Mr. Burrows are looking at the menu)
Mr. Allen :Let me see, I think I shall have some tomato soup,
and you?
Mr Burrows :I would rather have hors-d’oeuvre (a small amount of
food, usually cold, served before the main part of meal). I am not very fond of soup.
Mr. Allen :And afterwards a nice steak?
Mr Burrows :Yes, with chips
Mr. Allen :Waiter, tomato soup for one, hors d-oeuvre for one, steak and chips for two.
Waiter : Would you like the steak welldone or
underdown?
Mr. Allen :We don’t mind, as long as it is tender. Bring us
two pale ales (a type of beer usually sold in bottles or cans).
Waiter : Yes, sir. Anything else after the steak?
Mr Burrows :Some fruit. I
shall have some black coffee, will you have some to?
Mr. Allen :No, thank you, I’ll have a cup later. If you have
finished, we can go for a walk
Mr Burrows :I should like to. As you have been London before, you know
your way about and can be my guide
Mr. Allen :With pleasure

Membaca dan
Percakapan
(Kereta
mendekati London)
Tn. Allen : Kami akan segera berada di
Stasiun Waterloo.
Mr. Burrows : Kereta berhenti. Sungguh stasiun
yang luar biasa! Haruskah saya memanggil porter?
Tn. Allen : Silakan
Mr. Burrows : Porter! Silakan
bawa dua tas ini ke taksi
Porter : Apakah Anda punya
sesuatu selain tas tangan Anda.
Tn. Allen : Ya, ada dua batang
Porter : Ini taksi, tuan
Tn. Allen : Anda bisa meletakkan koper di
samping pengemudi
porter.
Porter : Terima kasih, tuan
(kepada sopir taksi)
Tn. Allen : Grosvenor Hotel. Stasiun
Victoria, kumohon!
Mr. Burrows : Apa saja bangunan
Kami sekarang
mengemudi di sepanjang Victoria Street. Ini Stasiun Victoria dan hotel. Ayo
kita keluar
(Mereka
memasuki hotel)
Pak Burrows : Di mana kantornya? (Berbicara kepada
resepsionis) Tolong, kami harus menyukai dua kamar.
Petugas bagian penerima tamu
: Kami memiliki
beberapa kamar kosong di lantai empat semuanya diambil
Tn. Allen : Saya tidak suka ruangan ini;
Terlalu gelap.
Mr. Burrows : Di mana jendela itu terlihat?
Porter : Ke halaman pengadilan
Mr Burrows : Apakah Anda tidak punya kamar
kosong di depan hotel?
Porter : Ya, tuan. Apakah Anda
ingin melihatnya?
Mr Burrows : Tolong.
(Mereka pergi
ke kamar kosong di depan hotel)
Mr Burrows : Ya, ini cocok untuk saya.
Bagaimana Anda suka ini, Tuan Allen?
Tn. Allen : Saya sangat menyukainya. Di
mana yang lainnya?
Porter : Sebelah, tuan; ini dia
Tn. Allen : Tahukah Anda, berapa harga
kamar-kamar ini?
Porter : Ya, Tuan. Masing-masing
lima pound sehari, termasuk sarapan.
Tn. Allen : Bagus sekali. Kami akan
mengambil kamar-kamar ini. Mohon bawa barang bawaan kami.
Pak Burrows : Jam berapa makan siang?
Porter : Table d'hote (makan
harga tetap). Restoran berada di lantai pertama.
(Kemudian di
ruang makan)
Pelayan kepala : Silakan duduk di meja ini. Berapa nomor
kamar Anda?
Tn. Allen : 57 dan 58
(Tn. Allen
dan Tn. Burrows melihat menu)
Tn. Allen : Coba saya lihat, saya pikir
saya akan memiliki sup tomat, dan Anda?
Mr Burrows : Saya lebih suka memiliki
hors-d’oeuvre (sejumlah kecil makanan, biasanya dingin, disajikan sebelum
bagian utama dari makanan). Saya tidak terlalu suka sup.
Tn. Allen : Dan setelahnya steak yang enak?
Mr Burrows : Ya, dengan keripik
Tn.
Pelayan : Ya, tuan. Ada lagi setelah
steak?
Mr Burrows : Beberapa buah. Saya akan minum
kopi hitam, maukah Anda memilikinya?
Tn. Allen : Tidak, terima kasih, nanti
saya akan minum. Jika sudah selesai, kita bisa jalan-jalan
Mr Burrows : Saya ingin. Seperti Anda pernah
Tn. Allen : Dengan senang hati
